Structural health monitoring of heritage

Real-time monitoring

The system includes:

  • Sensors set on strategic points along a historic structure to detect the presence and location of any damage due to earthquakes, degeneration of the cement, stone decay or the influence of pollution and tourism.
  • Their communication.
  • Their later analysis.

The monitoring system, based on IoT technology, is conducted in very short periods of time, thus providing real-time information to make the decision making quicker and closer to the moment.

Physicochemical damage monitoring

Due to the morphology of the heritage structures, whose construction material is usually made of stone or stone with mortar, it is important to monitor physicochemical damage.

The structural health monitoring of heritage solution consists on the installation of a wireless sensor network that allows studying physicochemical damage, measuring variables such as temperature, relative humidity, dew temperature, moisture content, absolute humidity, temperature amplitude, humidity amplitude or levels of polluting gases. It is also possible to install sensors to monitor dilatations, corrosion, molds or oxides.

Mechanical damage monitoring

Taking into account the present and/or future damages that can become a hazard for the stability of historic buildings or cause any harm to their users, several sensors are set up in the relevant points:

The following sensors are included:

  • An accelerometer to monitor vibrations, as they can affect the operating behavior of the structure.
  • An inclinometer to monitor the deviations from the vertical.
  • A linear crackmeter to determine the movements of the structures by opening already existing cracks.
  • Positioning sensors.

Data acquisition and communication system

The datalogger collects the data monitored and sends it, via internet, to a REST API service by means of a protocol developed by ENVIRA, which stores it in a database for future references. The period for sending the data can be adjusted according to the client's preferences. The flexibility of the firmware displayed at Nanoenvi stations enables the equipment to be directly integrated with any kind of IoT platform or control center, both cloud-based and local ones, through communication protocols (format of messages, communication and transport networks, M2M networks) completely adapted to each use. Communication with the optional communication modules at ENVIRA are wireless, with technologies such as 3g, LTE, LORA® and soon Narrow-Band.

Data display and analysis

All the data collected by the sensors are transmitted to the ENVIRA DS platform, where the data stored from the sensor can be read, graphicly displayed or downloaded for further analysis with other tools.

Thanks to this heritage structural health monitoring system, remote supervision with accurate data is possible, the information stored can be assessed and the cracks can be acted upon with foresight.

These data provide:

  • Real-time monitoring of structures and buildings.
  • Establishing the behavior trends of the cracks studied.
  • An increase in the safety and integrity of the structure.
  • The detection of anomalies in time.
  • A reduction in the cost of maintenance.
  • Better preventive preservation of the heritage.
  • An integration with strategies for structural reinforcement.

Warning systems

A warning system can be set up so that, in case the threshold measurements or definable percentages are surpassed, a warning e-mail or SMS is sent to the users of the system.
